Position Title: 2ND ENGINEER OFFICER SEOOW

Department: TECHNICAL

Reports To: CHIEF ENGINEER

Summary:

The 2ND Engineer SEOOW is primarily a watch keeping officer in full charge of the watch. He/she will have direct reporting to the FIRST ENGINEER and will have functional reporting to the CHIEF ENGINEER. As SEOOW he/she must carry out the duties of maintaining the watch to the highest safety standard, taking into consideration all the international regulations to protect the environment. He/she will quickly get familiar with the operation of the plant and will follow all maintenance duties assigned to him/her and assist the FIRST ENGINEER in maintenance and overhauls as directed. He/she may also be requested to take other duties as assigned by the CHIEF ENGINEER for the operation of the vessel.

Therefore the 2nd Engineer must be fluent in English both written and oral. Be proficient in the use of computer systems to include WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, etc. This will also form the base knowledge as most modern equipment including main engines and auxy DG’s are digitally controlled by computer software and computer based control systems.

The 2nd Engineer will be responsible for maintaining a safe efficient watch during his assigned duty times, ensuring that the machinery spaces are maintained clean and tidy at all times.

Assisting the Chief Engineer directly and be actively involved in the Safe, Efficient, Cost Effective Operation, ensuring that maintenance on all the equipment under his/her responsibility as designated in the standard operating procedures and AmosW is maintained to a high standard, but also to a high level of cleanliness. Ensuring the vessel is operated within ALL international standards IMO, SOLAS, ISM and the WSC company SEMS, so that the vessel can operate in a Safe, Secure and be Environmentally compliant, and in line with WSC company policies.

The 2nd Engineer must have a clear understanding of the needs of our passengers ensuring their comfort at all times, also be aware of the needs of the other departments such as the hotel and deck departments, and promote good working relationships between those departments, whilst also ensuring the needs of the technical department itself. In doing so must demonstrate an air of calmness and professionalism during difficult technical situations.

He/she will be fully conversant in Public Health standards, especially from a technical perspective.

Finally the 2nd Engineer must demonstrate a willingness to embrace all WSC company policies and procedures, show self-motivation to excel in all aspects of his duties and responsibilities, and overall be a synergistic member of the technical team, which predominantly is an international team, by establishing and maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor and demonstrate leadership by example.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

2nd Engineer:

Promulgate a culture of safe and environmentally compliant operations throughout the vessel.

Manage and control the operation of all engine machinery space equipment verifying compliance with Flag & Class and WSC company policies. Always confirm that the machinery is operated in a safe, efficient and cost effective way, and personnel are following the code of safe working practice.

Immediately reports all machinery spaces equipment that has sustained damage or serious malfunction to the Chief Engineer and First Engneer.

Promptly actions work orders from AmosW fleet maintenance program for his/her assigned duties and responsibilities, and accurately records history, performance of the machinery on completion of the work order in the AmosW database. This will involve work outside of watch times.

Works closely with the Technical Storekeeper to ensure sufficient levels of stock are maintained for both spare parts and consumables for planned upcoming maintenance and to cover unplanned breakdowns for the equipment that has been directly assigned to him/her under the watch “A, B & C. system as clearly defined in the watch responsibilities in the standard operating procedures.

Consistently monitors all purchase requisitions appertaining to the machinery and equipment under his/her care and provide detailed required parts descriptions to the Technical Storekeeper.

Works closely with the Chief Engineer to establish “Priority PO’s” in the system to ensure cost effective management of the team.

Supports the Chief Engineer with REFMAN dry-dock / wet-dock specifications ensuring detailed defect writing is carried out on any system under his care of responsibilities.

The 2nd Engineer will be proactive with machinery space inspections prior to and during his/her watch, to ensure safety is maintained at all times and that all environmental procedures are being followed, and actively engages to identify operational improvements and initiatives to further improve the quality assurance of the machinery spaces.

The 2nd Engineer will offer guidance and support to the 3rd Engineer, to offer mentoring and training to ensure the 3rd Engineer has the best possible opportunity to advance in his/her career.

Offer full technical support to all project initiatives being carried out by external contractors aboard. Ensure those external contractors follow WSC safety policy and also practice COSWP.

Follow fleet technical policy and procedures and SEMS regulations and encourage the team’s full participation, leading by example.

 

Other Duties for Safety Training / Watch Management / Staff Development:

 

Actively participates in shipboard safety training to ensure safety preparedness of the team. Ensures full familiarity of the safety equipment aboard and offers motivation to other members of the technical team.

Provides mentoring and training as required to other members of the technical team.

As the SEOOW carry out the duties in a safe and cost efficient way, adhering to all environmental policies and be familiar with worldwide regulations for the area that the vessel is sailing in. Ensure that all watch logs are being completed correctly.

As SEOOW practice ERM policies and functions. Practice proper closed loop communications etc.

Promptly completes team performance appraisals, advising the Chief Engineer directly on all issues.

 

Requirements:

Certificate of competence CoC Class2 Unlimited.

STCW 4th Part Basic Training

Fluent In English “Written & Oral” Communications.

Computer skills with AMOS, Refman, Word, power point and excel.

Excellent communication skills and ability to relate to guests and employees at all levels.

Must have ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with all departments and employees in a highly diverse environment and able to execute operational imperatives in a swift and demanding environment.

 

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

 

Mostly working in, a hot and noisy ship machinery space environment and be aware of the suitable PPE to use in these cases. Fully control all operations from the ECR during the watch.

Will be required to attend in general emergency incidences no matter what time of the day.

Will be required, to enter enclosed spaces.

Working in an office environment to maintain accurate reports.

Rotation is 4 months on 2 months off.

Regularly required to sit and stand.

Walk up and down stairs and ladders and enter tanks.

Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
