The Youth Counselor is a dynamic member of the onboard youth program. This position works with the guidance of the Youth Program Manager to execute the day-to-day youth activities (ages 3-17), toddler time, family programming, babysitting, and holiday activities. This position is also responsible for the execution of partnership activations while adhering to guidelines.

The Youth Counselor aims to exceed hospitality industry standards while ensuring complete guest and team satisfaction. The position will focus on ensuring operational goals are met as stipulated by onboard management and consistent training, leadership, development, and recognition are implemented into daily interactions with guests and crew.

The Youth Counselor will embody an outgoing personality, with a genuine passion for service. They will ensure that they and their colleagues deliver the promise of personalized service and memorable experiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All duties and responsibilities are to be performed following company standards, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental, and safety policies in any area of the ship required.

Operations:

  • Participates in boarding procedures by disseminating information regarding the Youth Program and Youth Evacuation Plan. Monitors and follows the detailed safety and security measures of the Youth Evacuation Plan in the event of an emergency. Utilizes good judgment and pays close attention to all details when escorting children to the parents/guardians in the assigned muster stations. • Exercises discretion and good judgment when interacting with all guests and crew. Acts as a role model for youth exhibiting leadership, friendliness, diplomacy, honesty, fair play, sportsmanship, and open-mindedness.
  • Maintains discipline within assigned group to ensure safety precautions are followed, including awareness of children’s whereabouts and their safety. Intervenes if a conflict arises and responds to all emergencies.
  • Maintains a high degree of “floor presence” to observe operations and maximize safety and security while providing an entertaining and age-appropriate environment.
  • Prepare activities and all necessary supplies ensuring efficient service, safety, cleanliness, and conformance to standards regarding youth activities.
  • Enforces and follows International Public Health cleaning and sanitation procedures for work surfaces, all related equipment, and utensils. Monitors activity centers, workstations, and staff for adherence to those procedures.
  • Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities as required. Financial:
  • Ensures marketing efforts reach guests to maximize participation in the Youth Program. Supports the point-of-sale functions to ensure the posting and reconciliation processes are conducted according to established procedures. Assist in preparing a variety of reports and letters utilizing assigned workstations and equipment, when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, recreation or related field from an accredited university, college, or the international equivalent.
  • Three to five years' experience managing recreational activities of large groups of youth, ages 3-17 years.
  • Experience working in youth groups, camps or similar positions preferred.
  • Has a vibrant and outgoing personality, exudes energy and positivity, with the ability to elevate the ambiance in all social and professional interactions.
  • Ability to work positively and cooperatively in a diverse team environment to meet overall established time frames for the entire youth recreation operation.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal service including needs assessment, problem resolution, and achievement of quality service standards.
  • Ability to capture and manage the attention of a large group of people with effective and courteous microphone techniques to serve as host or master of ceremonies.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the financial aspects of a youth recreational operation, including the successful identification of expense reduction through cost control.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the management of headcount within the assigned area, as it relates to and supports the business needs of the vessel.
  • Infant and child CPR certification and life saving certification from the American Red Cross or similar certifying organization preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Shoreside leadership, department heads, and other shipboard employees, as needed.
  • Working knowledge of computers and the internet, with experience in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, preferred.

LANGUAGE REQUIEREMENTS

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew.
  • Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors, and co-workers. In accordance with this is the ability to write reports and letters grammatically correct in English.
  • Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the shipboard employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy environment by enforcing organizational standards, procedures, and legal regulations. • All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
