ROLE DESCRIPTION
• Team of Nautical Instructors is responsible for providing functional educational programs to the Nautical crew of Viking River ships from onboarding of newcomers, repeater training for current employees and talent development programs. All programs use a blended learning approach and are a combination of: training in a simulator, practical training onboard, classroom workshops, coaching, e-learning and online seminars.
• This position requires traveling to Viking Longships in operation, harbors and various training locations in Europe.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Below list describes responsibilities of the whole Nautical Instructors team. The exact tasks and projects are distributed to the team members based on skills, knowledge and availability and may be changing on a regular basis.
Classroom and practical training:
• Training in nautical functional topics, including stretch knowledge (mostly on the Rhine), maneuvering of the ship, equipment, safety procedures and regulations
• Delivery of classroom training sessions in Nautical topics
• Delivery of practical training onboard a Viking Longship
• Coaching onboard trainers
• Preparation and execution of practical exams and assessments
• Onboarding newcomer Officers and Sailors
Simulator training:
• Delivery and facilitation of simulator training focused on maneuvering, including an explanation of scenarios and debriefing exercises
• Development of simulator scenarios for sailing and maneuvering on inland waterways
• Periodical assessments of trainee’s progress in the simulators
• Operating the simulators
Digital Learning:
• Preparation and leading of online webinars
• Using Microsoft Teams for training facilitation (creating channels, sharing material, planning online meetings)
• Participation in review of existing digital learning material
• In cooperation with digital learning experts, preparation of new e-learning material
Organization:
• Organize logistics of the training program: transport, meeting rooms, participants showing up on time etc.
• Alignment with external partners
• Organization of exams with an external institution
• Organization of statutory training
Administration:
• Preparing and filling in the documentation reg. trainees’ progress and monitoring proper filling in of those documents by all involved trainers (internal and external)
• Support trainees in organization of their external exams
Communication:
• Keep close communication with the participants regarding their program, progress and assignments
• Keep close contact with participants to discuss their progress
• Report on the status of training programs, and progress of trainees
• Participate in communication campaigns for the whole fleet regarding training programs
Other:
• Participate in long-term planning of talent management programs at Viking
• Quality assurance of external training sessions
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
• Passion for training in a Nautical field and adult education
• Proven track record of conducting training in a nautical field
• Ability to explain complex topics
• Experience as a Captain or First Officer on Rhine, Danube or Main (as an asset)
• Experience with sailing with a Viking Longship (as an asset)
• Excellent planning and organizational abilities
• Proactive and precise communicator
• Microsoft 365 (SharePoint)
• Fluency in English
• Communicative, inspiring and convincing personality
• Flexibility and willingness for cooperation and teamwork
• Reliable and stress-resistant
