We are currently recruiting for 3rd Officer ( watchkeeper ) for SWAN HELLENIC cruises
embarkation ASAP in January 2025

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Where reference is made to ‘V.Ships Deck Department Responsibility,’ (Responsibility) this document should be read with VLMS Fleet Ops 3.1. If there are any discrepancies between the VLMS and this document, the VLMS shall be the superseding document.
In normal operating conditions the composition of the watches will be 2 certified deck officers and 2 quartermasters. You will be the junior of the two watchkeepers (JOOW). The SOOW will normally hold the charge at sea and you may be assigned any role you are qualified to hold under VS22 (BRM Directive), which you should be familiar with and follow in letter and spirit.
Assist the Staff Captain with Responsibilities #6 ‘Deck Maintenance’ by taking ownership of the vessel’s mooring lines, their condition, readiness and suitability for use by
- Carrying out any inspections or maintenance relating to this equipment, in the PMS, and assigned to the Deck Department
- Carrying out any other inspections or maintenance you deem required to maintain this equipment, in good order and ready for immediate use
- Drawing to their attention, any deficiencies or defects that you cannot reasonably resolve on your own recognize
Assist the Staff Captain with Responsibilities #9 ‘Deck Department Inventory Control’ by
- Maintaining an accurate and up to date inventory of the vessel’s flags and shapes
- Causing that requisitions are raised in good time for any such items missing or required
Assist the Chief Officer with Responsibility #26 ‘Communications’ by taking ownership of the vessel’s GMDSS equipment, its routine testing and suitability for use in an emergency by
- Carrying out any inspections or maintenance relating to this equipment, in the PMS, and assigned to the Deck Department
- Carrying out any other inspections or maintenance you deem required to maintain this equipment, in good order and ready for immediate use
- Drawing to their attention any deficiencies or defects that you cannot reasonably resolve on your own recognize
- Informing them in good time when inspections or maintenance requiring external contractors are required, so they may be booked; and making all arrangements required to have the equipment ready for the inspection or maintenance
- Making any entries required by law, the VLMS or the conduct of good seamanship in the vessel’s GMDSS log book
- For the avoidance of doubt, GMDSS equipment shall be understood to be external RT devices, Inmarsat Sat-C units, SARTS and EPIRBS and devices connected thereto
Assist the Chief Officer with Responsibilities #21 ‘Navigation Planning and Execution’ and #22 ‘Charts and Publications’ by
- Recording or obtaining information on ports visited or to be visited in a systematic way to inform future planning
- Providing to them, fellow watchkeepers and the Master comprehensive and up to date meteorological information on the ports to be visited and the routes to be follows
- Providing to them and the Master comprehensive information on the tidal variations, flows and currents expected during upcoming ports and passages
- Assisting them, when required, in the inventory and updating of charts and publications
Assist the Staff Captain with Responsibilities #25 ‘Tender Operations’ by
- Preparing suitable voyage plans for coxswains to follow in tender ports
- Identifying navigation risks or hazards associated with tender operations in each port
Additional Duties:
- Ensure that planned and unplanned maintenance assigned to their discipline is conducted and reported.
- Attend passenger social events as directed by the Head of Department.
- Partake in inspections, trainings and meetings as directed by the Head of Department.
- Ensure direct reports are line managed effectively in accordance with Saga and V.Ships appraisal policies
- Ensure accessibility to direct reports and support individual’s needs, sourcing advice and reporting matters of a personal nature confidentially to the Head of Department where necessary.
- Other shipboard tasks pertaining to departmental operations as directed by Head of Department.
- Attending trainings and office visits arranged by V.Ships where possible
