The Vessel
REV Ocean is unlike any other ship. It is equipped with some of the most sophisticated facilities onboard for carrying out cutting-edge ocean science, as well as offering charter opportunities designed to integrate exploration, adventure, and science. REV Ocean will operate as a research vessel for 2/3 of the year and be available for charters for 1/3 of the year.

The Bosun is responsible for managing the day-to-day schedule of deckhands and ensuring that all deck operations and maintenance is completed as required in a safe, secure, and efficient manner, as per Chief Officers instructions. As a senior deck crew member, the bosun, may be required to take on further responsibilities as requested by the Bridge officers. This job description covers both the night bosun and the day bosun roles on board REV, however the daytime Bosun is considered the more senior position.
Responsibilities and DutiesKey responsibilities and duties include:
- Support the Captain in ensuring the ship’s compliance with company policies and procedures as well as international, state, or local maritime regulations.
- Support the Captain in ensuring the ship’s compliance with International Safety Management (ISM), classification society rules, and Maritime Insurance, within his/her area of responsibility.
- Support the Captain in achieving REV Objectives (safety, quality and environmental).
- Assist the Chief Officer as required with management of deck stocks, equipment, purchasing, preparation for voyages, maintenance, and deck operations.
- Monitor QHSE in all deck tasks and operations and report any issues, discrepancies, accidents, or incidents immediately to the bridge.
- Be familiar with emergency duties and assist in emergency situations as required.
- Partake in emergency drills and training as and when required.
- Assist the Chief Officer in deck planning and schedules as required.
- Manage, instruct, supervise, coordinate and work alongside the deck team to ensure upkeep and maintenance of all deck spaces, stores, and equipment.
- Assist in operations as required, including helicopter operations, bridge look-out, science operations (including deployment and recovery), small boat operations, in port night watches, mooring, DP reference system etc.
- Take charge of trawling operations in coordination with bridge.
- Protect deck spaces and equipment as required, including securing of cargo and or equipment on deck.
- Operate and maintain cranes, lifting equipment and trawl equipment as per requirements set out by the Chief Officer and Chief Engineer.
- Ensure Risk Assessments (RAs) are carried out when required. Evaluate processes and activities for hazards.
- Be familiar with the Permit to Work System (PTW) and request PTW from the bridge when required for tasks.
- Assist the Chief Officer in maintaining order, discipline, cleanliness, and preservation of the vessel.
- Assist the Chief Officer in monitoring the safety of tasks and operations. Aid and potentially run toolbox talks as required.
- Assist other departments as instructed by the Chief Officer/Bridge Officers.
- Assist the Chief Officer/Safety & Security Officer in training requirements and safety familiarisations if required.
- Provide a high level of service for guests, assisting with water sports equipment and activities as required, and maintaining guest deck spaces at all times.
- Drive tenders for guests, crew, and other personnel, when required and as directed.
