By knowing what to look for, and most importantly, knowing how to deal with problems if they arise, the outcome can prove a favourable one.

Audience:
The course is specifically designed for seafarers of all ranks, who do not have designated security duties as detailed within the Ship Security Plan. The course is also a requirement under the ISPS for anyone frequenting a ship often such as stewards, cruise ship staff, entertainers, etc.
Qualification:
Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended.
Pre-Requisites:
There are no pre-requisites for attending this course.
Regulations, Code, Convention Addressed:
The International Ship & Port Security (ISPS) Code, STCW Table A-VI/6-1.
Course Learning Objectives:
- To provide a general introduction to maritime security and raise awareness of security issues when alongside, at anchor and out at sea.
- To enable all seafarers to meet the minimum standard of competence in security awareness outlined in the ISPS Code and the STCW Convention Table A-VI/6-1 and the IMO Model Course 3.27.
- To identify and report security threats
- The learner is aware of the importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision.
- The learner is aware of the requirements and measures to maintain ship security.
- The learner is able to recognize and report a security threat.
Course Structure:
The course consists of:
- 3 modules representing the introduction, the three learning outcomes, and the final assessment & course feedback.
- Confirmation questions after each module
- A Final Official Course Assessment
Assessment:
There are multi-choice on-screen learning confirmation questions to complete at the end of each section and a final randomized test. This test may be taken as often as required and the pass mark is 70%.
Duration:
The course lasts for approximately 4 hours depending on the learner’s abilities and reading speed. However, you can enter and exit this course as often as you require.
Mode of Delivery:
This course is delivered using an interactive Learning Management System (LMS). Students follow easy on-screen instructions to progress through the course. The program contains text, still photographs, video clips, and animations. The course is delivered 100% online with absolutely no requirement to attend a test center.
Online Verification Requirements:
The student is required to complete a simple online verification form which links from the course, where they will submit a scan of an official photo ID such as a passport, CoC or similar. This is a requirement under Transport Canada.
Course Certification:
The online PSA Course is fully approved by Transport Canada and is internationally recognized and accepted. It includes the 2010 Manila Amendments and conforms to Regulation VI/5, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/5, paragraphs 1 to 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended, as laid down in Regulation VI/6 and Section A-VI/6 of the STCW Convention and Code.
Certificate:
A hardcopy, embossed version of the training certificate will be posted to your address free of charge. All PSA Course chapters must be successfully completed, paperwork received, and the assessment passed to receive your Official Transport Canada Training Certificate.

- Working knowledge of Maritime Security Terms and Definitions, including those that relate to Maritime Piracy and Armed Robbery against Shipping.

- The importance of information security with regards to Sensitive Security-Related Information (SSRI) and Communications.
- An understanding of the importance of security-related drills and exercises including those relating to Anti-Piracy and Anti -Armed Robbery.
- An understanding of the Maritime Security (MARSEC) Levels and their impact on security measures and procedures aboard ship and in port facilities.
- How to report a security incident.
- An understanding of security-related contingency plans.
- How to recognize security threats, including Maritime Piracy and Armed Robbery against Shipping.
