This training course is intended to meet this requirement of the STCW 78, as amended, regulation VI/1, and STCW code section A-VI/I-1 paragraph 2, and in accordance MNTB Survival Course Criteria, June 2013 for Per-sonal Survival Techniques Updating Training and is approved by the Irish Department of Transport, Marine Survey Office.

When you attend this course you will receive both the theoretical awareness and the practical experience to update your proficiency for sea survival in the event of abandonment of ship. Hands-On exercises will include the use of life jackets, life rafts and other survival equipment. You will also participate in a wet drill in the pool, where you get the chance to put theory into practice. You will experience the difficulties and practice the techniques used with life raft, lifejackets and other rescue devices to help you survive. You will also cover the principles of raft management, drowning and near drowning, hypothermia and communication.

After completing this course you will be able to:

  • Correctly don and use a survival suit.
  • Jump from height into water.
  • Float without a lifejacket.
  • Swim wearing a life jacket.
  • Right and board an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket.

Entry Requirements

In order to complete a Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques course you must have completed STCW recognised Personal Survival Techniques Course and either produce a copy of the valid certificate: or a valid self-declaration form confirming your on board training requirements have been met.

Bring your own swimwear. Lifejackets can be supplied but we encourage you to bring your own so that you can become familiar with your own equipment. Completion of a “Self-Declaration of Fitness” is required on the day by all participants.

An up to date ENG 11 Medical Certificate, a valid Seafarer’s Medical Certificate issued by any administration of an EU member state or a Doctor’s note stating you are considered medically fit to participate in all aspects of the course will be required.
