The aim of this Online Proficiency in Security Awareness Course, also referred to as a Vessel Security Awareness (VSA), is to provide those crew and staff onboard of Superyachts, Motor Yachts & Mega Yachts, with the essential education and training meeting with the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements, the 2010 Manila Amendments, and the requirements of Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 4 of the STCW Convention and Code, and Table A-VI/6-1, and the International Ship and Port Facility security (ISPS) Code.
Course Certification:
This course is fully approved by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) as meeting the requirements laid down in: Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and has also met the additional criteria specified in the STCW Convention and Code, applicable to the issue of this certificate.

Course Description:
The PSA Course is a mandatory minimum requirement for the security training of all shipboard personnel. The STCW Convention and Code as amended by the Manila amendments (2010) contains new requirements regarding security training. Anyone working on board, or frequenting a ship to which the ISPS Code applies must possess at a minimum, the Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) certification. This fully Online Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) Course provides the learner with the relevant Knowledge, Understanding & Proficiency (KUP) as per the requirements laid out by STCW. The course lasts approximately 4 hours. There are three Learning Outcomes to the training.
- The learner is aware of the importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision.
- The learner is aware of the requirements and measures to maintain ship security.
- The learner is able to recognise and report a security threat.
On completion of the training, the learner will possess sufficient knowledge to:
- Contribute to the enhancement of maritime security on their ship through heightened awareness.
- Be able to recognise and report security threats.
- Understand the need for, and methods of, maintaining a heightened degree of security awareness and vigilance.
Course Subjects:
- A working knowledge of Maritime Security Terms and Definitions, including those that relate to Maritime Piracy and Armed Robbery against Shipping.
- An understanding of International Maritime Security Policy.
- An understanding of the Maritime Security (MARSEC) Levels and their impact on security measures and procedures aboard ship and in port facilities.
- How to report a security incident.
- An understanding of security-related contingency plans.
- How to recognise security threats, including Maritime Piracy and Armed Robbery against Shipping.
- How to recognise weapons, dangerous substances and devices and an understanding of the damage they can cause.
- The importance of information security with regards to Sensitive Security-Related Information (SSRI) and Communications.
- An understanding of the importance of security related drills and exercises including those relating to Anti-Piracy and Anti -Armed Robbery.
