Introduction
This course is designed to meet the requirements for training laid out in the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) and the guidance laid out in the SOLAS Regulations 1974. The Ship Security Officer position was formalised under the regulations listed above and the training has become mandatory for all those wishing to fulfil the role of the Ship Security Officer on vessels over 500 tonnes.

- ISPS Duties & Responsibilities
- Maritime Security Levels
- The Ship Security Assessment
- The Ship Security Plan

- Interaction with Vessels, Authorities & Ports
- Training, Drills & Exercises
- Training the Trainer
- Suspicious Persons & Behaviour & Circumvention of Security
- Weapons & Explosives
- Practical Protective Measures & Contingency Planning (including anti-piracy procedures & drills)
- Documents, Records, Communications & Confidentiality
- Specialist counter piracy non-lethal acoustic equipment training
In addition to the mandatory ISPS Code training, our SSO course also contains a high counter piracy content and practical advice on dealing with security incidents and contingency plans. Our course is not ‘death by PowerPoint’, but interactive and includes group exercises and discussions.
Qualification
To be awarded the Ship Security Officer Qualification you must meet the MCA entry requirement of having 12 months sea service within the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy,Royal Marines, on vessels of more than 80gt or 24m, or be able to show an equivalent level of seagoing experience and knowledge of ship operation. Candidates without the pre-course experience will receive a certificate of Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, to be upgraded to SSO on completion of entry requirements.
