Overview

STCW Basic Safety Training Course is a requirement for all crew who want to work at sea on all commercial vessels, including cruise ships, ferries, and Superyachts.

What does STCW mean?

STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping. STCW Basic Safety Safety training was introduced as Governments around the world formally agreed to standardise training around the world. STCW was introduced in 1978, amended in 1995, and again in 2010. If you would like to know more about STCW then please see our page, what is STCW.

Flying Fish is recognised by the MCA to deliver the STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training course. The course complies with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW code

What does the STCW Basic Safety Training Course include?

This course covers the 5 elements that makeup STCW 2010. These include:

  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)
  • Sea Survival (PST)
  • Elementary First Aid (EFA)

Most of the training is practical, with lots of hands-on experience and practical exercises. You will learn a lot of new skills, have a great time and at the end of the week have the knowledge and practical experience to respond to an emergency onboard.

How long is the STCW course?

The STCW Basic Safety Training course is six days. Our course starts on a Monday and finishes on Saturday. Please see below for dates and availability.

Where to stay

Our STCW course takes place in Cowes, on the Isle of wight. If you choose our accommodation option, then you will stay in one of our crew houses in Cowes, comfortable and centrally located, only a 2-minute walk to the town and our training centre.

Accomodation available for £290

New to the Superyacht industry?

If you are new to the Maritime industry and don’t have experience working on Superyachts, then you will benefit by gaining extra knowledge to stay above the rest.

Powerboat Level 2 is a legal requirement to drive the yacht tenders so, for Deckhands, this is a must.

Along with our STCW Course, those looking to gain more experience and get that edge, we recommend our Superyacht Deckhand or Steward/ess courses.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal pre-course requirements but you must be aged 18 or over to enrol on this course.

Fire Fighting and Personal Survival are physically demanding and require a good level of fitness. We recommend that all customers complete an ENG1 medical or equivalent medical before enrolling on this course. If you have concerns over your fitness then please contact Flying Fish.

For successful completion, 100% attendance is required and students are expected to actively participate in all elements of the course.
